Construction Kids 7th Anniversary!

I can’t believe this is our 7th summer at the Brooklyn Navy Yard in our Workshop. I am full of the anticipatory nervous energy that comes every year at this time, as we put our final preparations in place for camp.

We start planning our summers in October of the preceding year. What programs will we offer? What new projects and returning projects will we teach? Then, we map out the cutting and production schedules for the 25,000 lbs. of wood we will fabricate for the summer. But, as we come to our anniversary every year, my nervous energy is replaced by excitement and curiosity which builds till our first day of camp, this year June 18th.

For me, each summer has been a unique experience: because of the new themes and projects we build, the campers (some new and a lot returning), and because of our team. Every year we welcome back a lot of old friends, and we expand to welcome new ones!

Each summer Construction Kids strives to accomplish several goals:

  • Providing a safe and positive environment for our young builders;
  • Teaching our campers, first timers, and returning friends new skills, and challenging them to grow as individuals through building, revising, and repairing their projects;
  • Having fun, making new friends, and creating memories that last!

There is a quote from Warren Buffett that I always try to remember as we start our summer camps. He once said:, “It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it. If you think about that, you’ll do things differently.” While this is only our 7th and not our 20th year, we have built a reputation that we’re proud of at Construction Kids. We’re known for our creative projects, for trusting young builders and holding them accountable for their behavior, and for having the most professional and dedicated staff in our industry. Because of this, we have a lot to live up to this summer, and every summer. If I did not believe we would exceed our parent and camper expectations every day, and enhance the reputation of Construction Kids, we would not be embarking on this journey for the summer.

A lot has changed at CK in the past 7 years. We have almost all new themes this summer compared to our first one. And we have become two camps: one for 4 to 6 year olds, and one for 7 to 9 year olds. We have grown from one summer camp location to 8, throughout NYC and Purchase County. What has stayed the same is our commitment to safety and our focus on children of all races, genders, learning styles, and unique traits experiencing something truly special and memorable.

I am counting down the days till our 7th Summer begins, and I want to say thank you from our team to all of our builders and caregivers who chose to include us in their summer plans! As a small token of our thanks, and in celebration of the great families that we have met over the years, we are having an anniversary sale through May 17th! Use the code ANNIVERSARY when you’re checking out to receive $35 off any camp week. We can’t wait to see you this summer.

Chief Builder,

Anthony Kent
